Book Club

- Meet Monthly 2nd Monday (except July and August)
- We meet at Ashanti Cafe in Hanover -people need to confirm their attendance as space is limited
- Time-1:00pm to 3:00pm (at the latest)
- The group agrees to what fiction book(s) to read the following month
- We try to choose genres that people might not normally read
- We choose older releases readily available at a library
- Members can choose to attend every month or now and then, based on their schedule and interest in the chosen book(s)

Bridge

- Meet Weekly on Wednesdays
- 1:00pm to approx. 3:00pm
- Meet at P & H Centre Hanover 269-7th Ave
- Casual no need to bring a partner
- Set-up games with whomever can attend that week -Like to switch-up partners throughout the afternoon
- Weekly members will receive an e-mail reminder to determine who will be attending
- Need minimum of 4 players or game is cancelled -

Cycling

- 2026 schedule- Meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday (May to Oct) at 1:00pm or rain date following week
- Ride length 10-15 km range; Approx. 1 1/2 - 2 hours cycling (not including water and snack breaks)
- Will endeavour to plan rides for all different skill levels and interest levels
- Generally cycle Bruce and Grey County smooth trails and road sections with low traffic
- E-bikes are welcome

Dinner Club
Information Updated Sept 2025
- Meet 1st Thursday each month. In December with date pending we try to have hors d'oeuvres only
- Dinner location-at Member's home according to schedule
- Time-approx. 5:30pm until everyone leaves
- Number of members who join determines the number of Host Homes (If 18 members interested then 3 Host Homes with 6 people)
- Karen provides the schedule
- The Host provides the Menu and prepares the Main Entree
- Menu can be based on a season, a country or a holiday (St. Patrick's Day)
- Members pick an item from the menu, make and bring to the dinner (appetizer, soup, vegetable or dessert)
- Members bring what they like to drink before and with dinner

- Effective Oct 2025 meet monthly on 3rd Tuesday (except July and Aug)-11:00am to approx. 2:00pm-start time may alter
- An e-mail is sent to all members including event details and instructions for each event/meeting
- In lieu of a monthly meeting there may be events/road trips that appeal to members which will occur on specific dates

Genealogy (In-Person Meetings
Information Updated November 2025
- The genealogy group is a place for members to collaborate on the research, organization and display of family trees
- Based on introductory sessons held in this fall the meetings of the group will be both "on-line" (Via Zoom) and "In-person
- In-Person meetings will be "office hours" type meet-ups to be scheduled for the 3rd Friday of the month
- Alternating between a venue in Hanover and a venue in Walkerton to be determined
- First meeting will be on Friday December 19, 2025 in Hanover (exact location to be determined)
- The focus of these meetings will be discussions of success and progress on individual's research and tree development
- Trips may be scheduled to local locations of genealogical information or tools (archives, libraries, etc.) depending on member interest
- The activity is open to any level of experience and is not based on any specific tool or software for doing research or development of family trees

- Starting Dec. 3rd, 2025 "On-line meetings" will take place via Zoom the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10am
- Topics will be announced by e-mail prior to the meeting
- Focus of meetings will be sharing research techniques and tools
- The activity is open to any level of experience and is not based on any specific tool or software for doing research of development of family trees

Golf

- Meet weekly Tuesdays at 10:00am
- May thru October (as long as weather permits)
- Select various golf courses in the area each week (suggestions from members are welcome)
- Members don't have to be a good golfer as long as you enjoy people and the golf game
- When golf reservation confirmed e-mail is sent to members with different green fees, for 9 or 18 holes, walking or cart rental
- E-mail sent to everyone with a spreadsheet showing tee off times and names of players
- Try to mix players so same players not always playing together
- Players often gather in the club house after the game

Hiking
Information Updated Nov 2025:
- Meet Weekly Thursdays at 10:00am (Mid April thru October/November as weather permits).
- In 2025 last hike was Nov 27th due to favourable weather conditions.
- Hikes are generally 4-5 km on average within Grey and Bruce Counties -
- Easy to moderate challenging trails normally take approximately 2 hours to complete.
- E-mails are typically sent out the weekend before the proposed hike
- E-mails include the trail route, its description, and rating along with directions to the trail and requesting members respond if participating.
- Car pooling is encouraged
- As weather warms up opportunties to have a picnic lunch on completing the trail
- Hikes have included: Sulphur Springs, Schmidt Lake, Brant Tact Trails, Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve, Kolapore Wilderness Trails, Pretty River, Old Baldy, Hoggs Falls and many more

Kayaking

- Plan is to start in May or June thru to September dependent on weather
- Meet weekly on Mondays
- Start time flexible usually between 11:00am and 1:00pm subject to group input (paddle time approx 3-4 hrs)
- kayaking activity will provide people with opportunities to network and coordinate as to day, time, place and transportation, in much the same way golf and hiking work
- It is hoped that participants will share new and interesting locations for everyone to enjoy

Knit/Crochet

- Meet bi-weekly (2nd and 4th Mondays of each month)
- Time-1:30 to approx. 3:30pm
- Social group that enjoys getting together to knit and crochet
- We try to help and encourage newbies
- Sometimes do the same project such as scarves and socks
- Share our patterns, wool, needles and hooks were needed and wanted
- Occasionally plan a day road trip/lunch to visit a yarn/wool shop

Pole Walk

- We are a low key group! Just come out and walk, enjoy the company and nature
- Meet weekly on Fridays at 10:00am
- May thru Oct as weather conditions permit
- Use local trails in Hanover, Walkerton, Durham on flat trails
- Easy to moderate pace for member to enjoy at their own speed
- Goal is to walk for approximately 1 hour..walk 1/2 hour out then turn around and come back OR if you prefer walk 15 minutes and turn around. Walk at whatever pace works for you.
- Walking Poles are not mandatory
- E-mails sent to members weekly advising the trail meeting place. Please respond only if you plan to walk
- Always open to suggestions from the group

Scotch Tasting

- Various events planned throughout the year-dates will be provided to members via an e-mail
- Location at Hanover Masonic Lodge from 2:00 to 4:00pm
- Members are offered a sample of 3 different scotches accompanied with unique food pairings
- Each sample chosen for their unique taste and character accompanied by a description that will enhance the tasting experience
- Members experience the differences water, location and maturation can bring to a scotch distillate
- Sessions often include informed commentary by a professional taster that includes history of distilling, methods and what we should experience

Snowshoe

- Meet weekly on Thursdays at 10:00am for approximately 1 1/2 hours
- in 2025 start December 18th thru March as good snow conditions exist on the local trails-Next date Jan 8, 2026
- Easy to moderate challenging trails for members to go at their own pace
- Distance between 3 to 5 kilometers depending on the challenge range on the trail
- Snow shoe trails have included:
- Allan Park Conservation Area, Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve and Forest, Sulphur Springs Conservation Area, Durham Conservation Area, Hepworth Conservation Area (Sawmill Nordic Centre) and more

Theatre

- Group outings to amateur and professional theatre shows within reasonable driving distance
- Approximately one a month excluding mid winter
- Matinee Performances at 2:00PM
- Group tickets purchased for selected shows at discount rates
- Lunch is arranged for the group at restaurants near each theatre
- Carpooling is encouraged
- Payment for tickets by e-transfer to treas@hapc.ca or paid by cash or cheque at designated probus monthly meetings
- Group members receive regular e-mails providing show options, lunch details, ticket payment procedures, and asking members to confirm which show ticket they want
- Theatre confirmed show dates will be shown on the Hanover Area Probus Club (hapc.ca) website calendar
- Group members meet once or twice a year, in conjunction with the travel group, to select the shows for group outings. The next meeting will be on January 21, 2026.
- A comprehensive list of theatres, their upcoming production schedules and contact information is compiled and distrubuted to members by e-mail.
- Any bus outings offered by local travel agents and tour operators are included in the above list

Wine Tasting

- NEXT EVENT-Dec 31, 2025-New Year's Eve Italian Wine and Food Pairing at 5:00pm Best Western in Walkerton
- This is a very popular event and already sold out
- Celebrate the New Year at midnight italian time (6:00EST) with a Persecco toast.
- An intalian inspired four course dinner with dinner tables set up for 8 persons
- Cost is $135 per person
- Best Western is offering rate of $110/room which includes a buffet breakfast.
General Event Information:
- 4-6 events planned throughout the year
- Committee members determine the date(s), time, themes and locations throughout the year
- The presenters: a member of wine group, wine supplier (an importer or local winery) or wine aficionado -
- To enhance tasting experience food appetizers are paired with the wines
- Member volunteers are need to make the appetizers
- Volunteers needed at each tasting event to assist in serving wines and appetizers to members at each table
